Procedure Text

What is Procedure text ?

Procedure Text adalah teks yang memberitahukan dan mengarahkan seseorang tentang bagaimana / cara melakukan sesuatu, atau bagaimana mencapai suatu tujuan.

a. Function :
- tells us a procedure or how to make or to make something step by step. The
procedure itself consists of a set of instruction or directions to show steps
or stages.
- designed to describe how something is achieved through a sequence of actions
or steps.
- it explains how people perform different process in a sequence or steps

b. Parts of Text :
Teks ini biasanya memiliki 3 bagian utama :
• Goal (Aim/Purpose/Title/Judul/Tujuan)
• Material (bahan-bahan/sesuatu yang diperlukan untuk mencapai tujuan)
- Tidak selalu ada dalam teks prosedur.
- Berisi daftar bahan-bahan.
• Steps
Berisi serangkaian langkah-langkah/kegiatan/prosedur untuk mencapai tujuan.

Catatan : Tidak semua procedure texts terdiri dari tiga bagian teks tersebut,
kadang-kadang ada procedure texts yang hanya terdiri dari goal dan
diikuti beberapa steps saja, misalnya teks procedure yang berjudul
“How to be successful in the National Exam”.

c. Language Features :
- usually use temporal conjunction such as : first / first of all, second,
third, next, then, at last / finally.
- Menggunakan Simple Present Tense, biasanya dalam bentuk kalimat imperative.
- Kita biasanya menggunakan kata-kata hubung temporal berikut (diletakkan di
awal kalimat) untuk menunjukkan urutan kegiatan :
 Next, ... First of all, ...
 Second, ...  After that, ...
 Third, ...  Finally, ...
 Then, ...  At last, ...
Kata-kata tersebut diletakkan di awal kalimat
- Menggunakan action verbs seperti : turn on, stir, cook, dll.

Example of Procedure Text 1 :

Material :
 4 ripe banana
 1 egg
 1 tsp sugar
 6 tbsp flour
 A pinch of salt
 Vegetable oil

Methods :
1. place flour in a deep mixing bowl. Make a well in the middle of the flour and add egg, sugar and salt in it. Add water little by little. Mix them till smooth for coating.
2. Peel banana and cut in half length wise and then cut again with 4 inch width. Dip into mixture to coat generously.
3. heat oil in a wok. Fry the banana till golden brown and crispy.
4. serve warmly.

The food is enough for 5 people.

Example of Procedure Text 2 :

How to Roast Your Turkey

To prepare the turkey for roasting, first remove the giblets (and save for gravy or stuffing). Next, rinse the bird inside and out and pat dry with paper towels.
If you are stuffing the bird, stuff it loosely, allowing about ½ to ¾ cup stuffing per pound of turkey.
Brush the skin with melted butter or oil. Tie drumsticks together with string (for stuffed birds only).
Insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the thigh. The thermometer should point towards the body, and should not touch the bone.
Place the bird on a rack in a roasting pan, and into a preheated 350 degree F (175 degrees C) oven. Use the following chart to estimate the time required for baking.
Bake until the skin is a light golden color, and then cover loosely with a foil tent. During the last 45 minutes of baking, remove the foil tent to brown the skin. Basting is not necessary, but helps promote even browning.

The turkey is done when the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees F (75 degrees C) at the thigh.
